MOUNTAINS, CULTURE AND DAYS AWAY
Oberammergau and the Ammergau Alps
Our excursion ideas for your holiday-home stay.
PERSONALLY RECOMMENDED
Our local tips.
These are the places and excursion ideas we personally recommend to our guests. Before you visit, please check opening hours, booking options and current operating information.
Where we like to eat
Wankalm
A cosy pizzeria above the house, up across the meadow. We love going there ourselves. Booking ahead is recommended.
Die Post in the village centre
A little more traditional – and, in our experience, very welcoming and very good.
Gasthof Stern in Unterammergau
Another place we recommend to our guests for dinner.
Hiking & mountains
Up the Laber
Our suggestion: start at Wellenberg and hike up the Laber. At the top, we like to stop at the Laberei. If the cable car is running, you can take the gondola back down. Check the time of the last descent before setting off.
Kofel & Kolbensattel
From the house, you can plan a mountain hike towards the Kofel and on to Kolbensattel. If it is operating, the alpine coaster is one way to finish the day. This is a mountain hike, not a stroll: check the exact route, its demands and current conditions in advance; the summit and onward route must suit your experience.
Up and across the Hörnle
Take the train or drive to Unterammergau, then head towards the Hörnle: we enjoy both the circular route and a carefully planned hike back to Oberammergau. Choose your exact route to suit your fitness and the weather; if crossing the ridge, remember to plan how you will return to your car.
To Ettal Abbey
A hiking idea straight from the house: walk to Ettal Abbey, visit the monastery and stop at the Ettaler Mühle. Plan your outward and return routes, as well as your refreshment stop, in advance.
Culture & excursions
Linderhof Palace
Drive or take the bus to the palace for a tour – in our view, it is fascinating for children too. Experienced hikers with strong fitness can plan a separate hiking day, returning via Pürschling and Kolbensattel. Please prepare for this longer mountain route separately from a straightforward palace visit.
Glentleiten Open-Air Museum
Another of our suggestions for a day away from the mountain trails: the Glentleiten Open-Air Museum.
These ideas are not a substitute for a detailed route description. Check the weather, trail closures, elevation gain and walking time; plan suitable equipment, sufficient daylight and a safety margin. The cable car and alpine coaster may close due to weather or seasonal operations.

Around Oberammergau
Discover house façades adorned with Lüftlmalerei, the Pilatushaus and the village's woodcarving tradition. From Haus Schwänli, you can explore Oberammergau and its surroundings.
Out and about
The Ammergau Alps offer a wealth of hiking destinations. Places to visit include the Schleierfälle waterfalls, the Scheibum gorge and Ettaler Manndl. In winter, depending on snow conditions, cross-country skiing and other winter sports join the options. Check current conditions in advance and choose routes suited to your experience.
Excursions around the region
Ettal Abbey, Neuschwanstein Castle, the Glentleiten Open-Air Museum, Lake Starnberg and Munich all make for varied days out. The Zugspitze and Lake Eibsee are also destinations within the wider region.
Current information
Route descriptions, events and information on cable-car operations are available from the tourist information office and the respective operators. Check opening hours and the weather before you set off.
